Leighton was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, and spent his childhood in the Kensington neighborhood of north Edmonton. He is a status Indian, with his great-grandfather having served as the Hereditary Chief of the Carry The Kettle or Jack Band in Sintaluta, Saskatchewan. Both his grandmother and great-aunt were well-known survivors of the Brandon Indian Residential School.
