He earned his J.D. from the University of Richmond School of Law in 1977, where he was a member of the Law Review and Phi Alpha Delta. He received his B.A. from the University of Virginia in 1973. Admitted to practice in Virginia (1977) and Colorado (1983), he is also licensed before multiple U.S. Courts of Appeals, the U.S. District Courts for Virginia and Colorado, and the United States Supreme Court.
